Jakarta – The ministry of environment and forestry (KLHK), the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI), PT Musim Mas, Wings Group and communities were united to launch a hand-washing movement as part of their joint social-care action to help fight the spread of Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). They handed out 50,000 packets of soaps to the residents of Jagakarsa, Pasar Rebo, and Serpong.

The soaps are donations from companies which produce soap from palm oil as raw material. In addition to that, soaps with leaflets on hand-washing guidelines were also donated to a number of locations in Greater Jakarta. The locations were chosen based on consideration of their condition being impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on recommendations from the World Health Oorganization (WHO), the spread of Covid-19 pandemic can be stopped by implementing social distancing and washing hands regularly with soaps.
The KLHK’s Pollution and Environmental Damage Control Director General M.R. Karliansyah, who led the hand-washing movement, said that protecting ourselves means protecting our families. “Everybody can protect themselves from the Covid-19. One way to do it is by washing hands with soap. Let’s take care each other, protect each other, whoever they are around us, especially our own families,” said Karliansyah.
KLHK had also conducted a series of organic disinfectants spraying in a number of areas already infected with the Covid-19 in Greater Jakarta. Disinfectants spraying is required to be conducted in areas already infected with the Coronavirus. The disinfectant spraying will prevent the areas from the virus and dangerous bacteria that can transmit diseases.

Besides the soap donation and disinfectants spraying, the KLHK also gave out maskers to a number of hospitals, police precincts, and public health centers (Puskesmas). The social-care movement had been conducted until Wednesday (April 1) in residential areas affected by the pandemic and in traditional markets in Jakarta. (rea)
