RI Sees Decreasing Deforestation During 2021-2022

JAKARTA – Indonesia saw a significant decrease of deforestation during 2021-2022 at 8.4% compared to that of the previous period of 2020-2021. Its net deforestation during 2021 -2022 reached 104,000 hectares, as compared to its net deforestation in 2020-2021 at 113,500 hectares.

The environment and forestry ministry’s (KLHK) Acting Director General of Forest Planning and Environmental Management (PKTL), Ruandha A. Sugardiman said that based on previous data Indonesia’s deforestation was relatively low and tends to be stable.

“The declining trend shows that various efforts pursued by the KLHK to reduce deforestation in Indonesia have been paying off significantly,” Ruandha said recently.

He said that the condition of land and forest cover in Indonesia is dynamic, depending on the need of lands for development projects and other business activities. The change could be caused by conversion of forests for non-forest developments, forest encroachment, forest fires, and forest rehabilitation.

“To find out the condition of land and forest cover, we conduct monitoring of forests and deforestation every year over total areas of 187 million hectares across Indonesia,” he said.

According to him, the monitoring is conducted in forest areas and non-forest areas and it is based on map of Indonesian image under the program of one map policy.

The monitoring is implemented by using main data of satellite imagery provided by the aviation and space research organization (OR-PA) of the National Research and Innovation Board (BRIN) and identified visually by KLHK’s interpreting technical personnel available across Indonesia.

Based on Indonesia’s forest monitoring in 2022, the wooded areas in Indonesia amounted to 96.0 million hectares or 51.2% of the total land areas of the country. A total of 92.0% of the total wooded areas or 88.3 million hectares are located in forest areas.

Meanwhile, Director of Inventory and forest resource monitoring at the PKTL directorate general, Belinda A. Margono said the deforestation figures of 104,000 hectares in Indonesia during 2021-2022 was calculated from a reduction in gross deforestation of 119,400 hectares with the reforestation of 15,400 hectares.

During 2020-2021, Indonesia’s net deforestation of 113,500 hectares was calculated from a reduction of gross deforestation of 139,100 hectares with reforestation of 25,600 hectares.

The biggest size of gross deforestation during 2021-2022 was seen in secondary forests at 106,400 hectares (89.1%), of which 70.9% or 75,400 hectares are located in forest areas and the other 31,000 hectares or 29.1% in non-forest areas. (*)
