Jakarta – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) launched the carbon exchange of Indonesia (IDX Carbon) on Tuesday, 26 September 2023, in Jakarta.

President Jokowi said that the first carbon exchange in Indonesia is part of its commitment to support the global endeavor to tackle the problem of climate change.
“This is our real contribution to the world in mitigating the impacts of climate change. The funds from the carbon trading will be then reinvested for the protection of environment, especially through reduction of carbon emissions,” President said when addressing the launching ceremony of the IDX Carbon in the Main Hall of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) in Central Jakarta.
He pointed out that Indonesia has a big potential in implementing the nature-based solution. Indonesia has become the only country, whose fulfilment of carbon emission reduction comes 60% from the natural sector.
“If calculated, our potential of carbon trading can reach a total value of Rp3,000 trillion, and it could be even more. It’s huge,” the President said.
According to him, the potential will become a new economic opportunity, which is sustainable and ecofriendly, and in line with the global trend toward realizing green economy. It is a necessary step as the world is facing the real threat of climate change that should be tackled with concrete steps.
“This carbon exchange that we launch today can be a concrete step, a big step for Indonesia to reach our target of NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution),” said President.
President Jokowi called on related institutions and all stakeholders to implement a number of concrete steps, such as taking the international carbon standard as a reference and using the technology to make transactions effectively and efficiently.
“I’m very optimistic that Indonesia can become an international hub of carbon trading if the necessary concrete steps are implemented consistently and cooperatively by all stakeholders—the government, the private sector, and the general public,” said the President. (*)
