BANDUNG – Palm oil waste has become an environmental issue if it is just thrown away. But now there is an effective solution to that. The National Research and Innovation Board (BRIN) has secured a collaboration to convert the waste into chicken feed.
BRIN has reached a partnership agreement with Oteck, a Japanese company, to develop a production facility to make the palm oil waste as raw material to produce the chicken feed. The agreement was signed on Monday, 29 April 2024.
Nadirah, the head of carbon cycle management research team at the research center of sustainable production and life cycle assessment system (PR SPBPDH) of BRIN, said that Indonesia’s palm oil industries produce millions of tons of palm oil waste every year. “Based on our research result, we will apply the right technology to make it as raw material to make a new product with higher added value,” she said.
“It is also aimed to reduce its environmental impact, besides producing a product to meet local need,” Nadirah was quoted by BRIN website as saying on Monday, 27 May 2024.
Nadirah said that Oteck will be responsible for the making of the production equipment and facility, including the energy supply. “PR SPBPDH BRIN will support the use of technology and manufacturing in producing the agriculture and food production equipment and facilities,” she said.
According to her, the research is aimed to produce efficient production facility of chicken feed from the biomass waste of palm oil, and chicken feed product of high quality and rich in beta carotene.
“It will provide many benefits. First, the palm oil waste will have economic value. Second, it becomes sustainable source of chicken feed that is healthy and rich in beta carotene. Third, it will contribute to the production of chicken that is healthier and more nutritious for consumers,” said Nadirah. (*)
