BOGOR – A total of 36 participants from 17 like-minded countries (LMCs) are attending a training of capacity improvement on sustainable palm oil cultivation in Bogor, West Java.

The training, which will last from 22 June to 2 July 2024, is a collaboration between Indonesia’s foreign ministry (Kemenlu), Bogor University of Agriculture (IPB University) and the International Development Cooperation Fund Institution (LDKPI).
The foreign ministry’s America and Europe Director General Umar Hadi said that the training is also part of Indonesian government’s efforts to share knowledge and experience on palm oil with other countries.
“The exhange of experiences and good practices on oil palm cultivation is needed to ensure that the palm oil can sustain in the global market,” Umar Hadi said in the IPB International Convention Center, Bogor, as quoted by Antara on Monday (24/6/2024).
He said the 17 countries are Argentine, Bolivia, Brazil, Dominica, Equador, Ghana, Guatemala, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia and Thailand. “There are also participants from Indonesia as the host,” he said.
Umar Hadi said that the training participants consist of researchers, policy makers, businessmen and diplomats. “Looking forward, the challenge in palm oil industries is how to ensure that smallholders can survive and thrive in the agriculture sector. The farmers’ welfare is very dependent on the commodities they cultivate. It’s important for the world to be free of poverty and hunger as has been envisioned by the UN through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said.
IPB University Deputy Rector in charge of research, innovation and agromaritime development, Ernan Rustiadi said that IPB has actively involved in strengthening the capacity of smallholders and local stakeholders and contributed in the achievement of sustainable palm oil sector.
“It is also expected that this training will increase the cooperation between Indonesia and countries of Global South through collaboration, research and education,” said Ernan. (*)
