What Is Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) In Palm Oil?

Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) in palm oil is a compound that can be derived from the process of  transesterification of fatty acids in palm oil with methanol.

The FAME is a type of biodiesel that can be processed from vegetable oils, including palm oil. It can be used as an ecofriendly alternative of fuel. Known for its stability, it is widely used as a renewable energy source.

FAME Production From Palm Oil

The production process of FAME from palm oil undergoes the following main stages:

  1. Transesterification: The palm oil, consisting of triglycerides (fatty molecules), mixed with methanol and catalyst (usually a strong base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide). This reaction will break down the triglycerides into fatty acid esters (FAME) and glycerin as a byproduct.
  1. Purification of FAME:

After transesterification, the mixture is separated. The FAME is purified by removing glycerin that will then leave methanol and other impurities to produce high-quality biodiesel.

FAME Characteristics of Palm Oil

  • Chemical Composition:

FAME is an ester compound processed from fatty acids and methanol. In palm oil, the main fatty acids are the palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid.

  • Biodiesel: FAME is a type of biodiesel processed from palm oil. The biodiesel type can be used directly as fuel or mixed with fossil diesel fuel.
  • Physical Properties: FAME has lower viscosity compared to the crude palm oil, making it easier to be used in modern diesel engines without any major modifications.

Use of Palm-based FAME

  1. Biodiesel: FAME from palm oil is used as biodiesel to replace or to be blended with the conventional diesel fuel. It is known as green and renewable energy as it is processed from palm oil, which is a vegetable oil.
  2. Ecofriendly Fuel:

FAME produces lower carbon emission compared to the fossil fuels. Its use will help reduce carbon footprints and contribute to the reduction of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission.

  1. Cosmetic & Cleaning Industry

Besides biofuel, the FAME can be also used as solvent and base material in producing soaps, detergents, and cleaning products because of its environmentally friendly chemical properties.

Advantages of Palm-based FAME

  • Renewable Energy: FAME from palm oil is a renewable energy that can reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Environmentally-Friendly:
  • The use of FAME-based biodiesel helps reduce greenhouse gas emission and air pollution, and supports the initiative for environmental sustainability.
  • Abundant Vegetable Source:

Palm oil is the most productive vegetable oil in the world, making it as a reliable source for the production of biodiesel in big scale.

Challenges of FAME Use

  • Environmental Impact:

Although FAME is a renewable energy, but reckless expansion of oil palm plantations for FAME production without heeding the principles of sustainability will cause deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

  • Temperature Stability:

FAME from palm oil can crystalize at low temperature, causing a challenge in colder climates, although the processing technology has been continually progressing to solve this kind of problem.

Overall, the oil palm-based FAME plays an important role in supporting the renewable energy and in reducing the environmental impacts resulted from the use of fossil fuels. (*)
