JAKARTA – Indonesia has no policy and governance on sustainable palm oil production. Such is another myth fabricated by certain groups of people, which is easily debunked by the following facts and description.
The palm oil governance has long been applied in Indonesia at the level of policies, in the forms of laws and implementing regulations, which include on the certification of sustainable palm oil. At the policy level, the government has adopted sustainable oil palm plantations as stipulated in Law No. 18 of 2004, which was later revised with Law No. 39 of 2014 on plantations.
Then for its implementation, it is stipulated in the Agriculture Minister Regulation No. 19/2011 on guidelines for sustainable oil palm plantations (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil/ISPO) which rules that ISPO is mandatory for oil palm growers. The regulation was replaced by the Agriculture Minister Regulation No.11/2015 on the certification system of Indonesian sustainable palm oil (ISPO).
Previously, the Indonesian oil palm growers had voluntarily adopted the principles of sustainable oil palm plantations through the Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since 2004.
To further strengthen and integrate sectors related to the development of sustainable oil palm plantations, the Indonesian government issued Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 44/2020 on the certification system of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO). The Presidential Regulation was then followed up with the Agriculture Minister Regulation No.38/2020 on the implementation of the system of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Certification.
The government also issued Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No.6/ 2019 concerning the National Action Plan for Sustainable Oil Palm Plantations (RAN-KSB) for 2019-2024 as part of oil palm plantation governance. The RAN-KSB is aimed to increase the capability of oil palm shareholders, resolve land status and legalization, utilize palm oil as feedstock for new and renewable energy, improve palm oil diplomacy, and accelerate the achievement of sustainable Indonesian palm oil plantations.
