RI Boosts Export Of Palm Kernel Shells To Japan

JAKARTA – Indonesia is ready to increase exports of renewable energy products, such as palm kernel shells (PKS) and sawdust or wood pellets to Japan. The export preparations were made after a meeting between the trade ministry of Indonesia (Kemendag) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) of  Japan.

Kemendag Export Development Director General Fajarini Puntodewi has warmly welcomed the commitment of SMBC to support the efforts of increasing the exports of Indonesia to Japan.

“One of our goals of cooperation is to increase the exports of renewable energy products, such as palm kernel shells and wood pellets,” said Puntodewi in a press statement on Tuesday (10/6/2025).

It has been reported that the demand for such renewable energy products is surging in Japan as the renewable products are part of the energy transition program toward reaching green energy. Puntodewi said that other export products that will be increased to Japan are agricultural and fishery products, such as tuna fish.

According to Puntodewi, under the cooperation SMBC will play an active role in developing logistic and distribution networks to support the exports from Indonesia to Japan.

“We appreciate the commitment of SMBC to collaborate in supporting Indonesian exports, including in pushing up the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and in expanding markets in Japan and other prospective ones,” said Puntodewi.

General Manager of Asia Pacific SMBC, Tomohiro Suzuki said that they will utilize the networks of their clients of more than 400,000 companies in Japan to open new market opportunities for top products from Indonesia.

SMBC will provide facilities of financing, market access, business connections with potential buyers in Japan. SMBC will also give trainings and technical assistances to empower Indonesia’s SMEs to penetrate global market.

“We believe Indonesia’s small and medium companies have big potential to meet the market needs in Japan, especially for quality and sustainable products,” said Tomohiro Suzuki. (*)
