PLN To Use Biomass Up To 10M Tons For Power Plants’ Cofiring

JAKARTA – President Commissioner of PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (EPI), Nikson Silalahi is optimistic that the company’s target of using 3.0 million tons of biomass for cofiring scheme of the combined-cycle power plants (PLTU) of the state-owned electricity company PLN Group will be realized this year.

“As of July 2025, PLN Energi Primer Indonesia had supplied almost 1.2 million tons of biomass to the PLTU. We continue  working hard so that by December 2025 our target of 3.0 million tons can be achieved,” Nikson said during the event of “Nusantara Energi Forum 2025” as reported on Saturday (30/08/2025).

According to Nikson, to manage the supply chain of biomass up to the PLTU units, PLN EPI had developed an ecosystem of biomass supply chain, which is integrated from upstream to downstream through four agendas:

First, planting of the energy crops in dry land and marginal land areas by involving local people (cooperatives, BUMDes, Gapoktan). Second, the use of wastes of agriculture, plantations, and forestry as biomass raw material.

Third, development of logistic infrastructure or supply chain, consisting of sub hub, hub, and main hub for collection, processing, and  distribution of biomass to PLTU units. Fourth, involving cooperatives as mediator between farmers and the processing facilities and to strengthen the resilience of supply.

To fulfill the biomass need at 10.2 million tons per year for the next few years, PLN EPI has implemented the program of Green Economy Village (GEV) in various regions, such as Gunung Kidul, Cilacap, and Tasikmalaya, with a total planting areas of more than 953,000 seedlings of energy crops on a total land areas of more than 760 hectares.

In addition, PLN EPI has also developed an integrated farming system, which combines energy crops, foods, and husbandry. The program has involved more than 1,000 farmers and dozens of farming groups in the planting and use of biomass, and targeted implementation of cofiring in 52 units of PLTU, with realization in 48 locations until the second quarter 2025.

Nikson also mentioned that PLN EPI will continually develop the cofiring technology, which enables the blending of biomass with coal in PLTU as a fast and efficient solution of energy transition. The program has resulted in significant contribution of reduction of C02 emissions at 3.3 million tons per year in 2025, increase of energy efficiency with rising calorific value of biomass (up to 3,138 kCal/kg).
