RI To Start Using SAF For International Flights To Cut Emissions

JAKARTA – The Indonesian government aims to implement the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) starting in 2027 as part of efforts to curb carbon emissions and drive the transformation of the aviation sector toward a more environmentally friendly condition.

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) stated that SAF will serve as a cleaner alternative to the conventional aviation fuel, supporting the national air transport sector in realizing their decarbonization agenda.

“The goal for 2027 is to utilize Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). It is a much cleaner alternative to conventional aviation fuel,” AHY said when opening a Ministerial-Level Coordination Meeting on Strengthening Airport Ecosystem Governance in Jakarta on Thursday (25/06/2026).

According to Minister AHY, the transition toward low-emission aviation is a crucial component of the government’s efforts to balance economic growth with a commitment to environmental sustainability.

He emphasized that the future development of the aviation industry must not focus solely on enhancing connectivity and economic growth but must also address the impacts of climate change and rising global carbon emissions.

Consequently, the government is preparing a series of decarbonization measures, ranging from reducing energy consumption and switching to cleaner energy sources to improving the efficiency of national resource utilization.

AHY explained that the strategy would be part of strengthening the national airport ecosystem, ensuring that the development of the air transport sector aligns with the sustainable development agenda.

In addition to the use of SAF, the government is also promoting the concept of net-zero emission airports through the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies and infrastructure.

He noted that several countries have already implemented the concept of low-emission airport, which can serve as a reference for developing sustainable airports in Indonesia.

In the initial phase, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) will be used for approximately 1.0 percent of international flights departing from Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten, and I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali province.

The government hopes this initial implementation will lay the foundation for the gradual expansion of SAF usage to a wider range of international and domestic flight routes in the future.

AHY emphasized that SAF development should ideally be carried out domestically across the entire supply chain—from upstream to downstream—thereby not only supporting emission reductions but also strengthening the national energy industry.

Furthermore, all SAF development should meet the sustainability and quality standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure widespread adoption within the global aviation industry. (*)
