IPB Researchers Create Deodorizer Spray From Palm Oil

Jakarta  – Researchers of Bogor University of Agriculture (IPB) managed to create a deodorizer product called odor eliminator spray Egea from palm oil.

Dhani Satria Wibawa, one of the IPB researchers, said in a press release recently that the deodorizer Egea is developed from nonionic diethanolamide (DEA) surfactant from palm oil and active substance of zinc ricinoleate from castor oil (Ricinus communis).

The innovative product was developed by the researchers of the Surfactant and Bio-energy Research Center (SBRC), a research and community service institution of Bogor University of Agriculture (LPPM IPB).

The product can be further developed to have eight variants of applications for hijabs, helmets, shoes, jackets, carpets, and sofas, pillows and linens, cat litters, car seats and carpets. The product dries quickly and leaves no stain.

Dhani said that the development of the product was initially started from the demand of several groups of people who wanted the SBRC to make a deodorizer of cat litters. There were also demands from other people who ask for a product to eliminate offensive odor in helmets and shoes. And the last was a demand for a product to eliminate unpleasant odors in hijabs.

“We develop the deodorizer product based on the demand of the people who want to eliminate the offensive stench in helmets, shoes, hijabs, jackets, carpets and sofas, pillows and linens, cat litters, car seats and carpets after being used for certain periods of time,” said Dhani.

He said that the product was also developed with the aim to train the junior researchers in SBRC with technopreneurship skill in creating innovative products that can be further developed for commercialization.

He said that the Egea product is made of natural and environmentally friendly raw materials. “For the formulation we use substances with polar and non-polar in nature. So, we need nonionic surfactants to combine all raw materials. The Egea product uses diethanolamide (DEA) surfactants from palm oil which is developed by SBRC,” he said.

The Egea contains active zinc ricinoleate as odor absorber, as using only fragrance will only disguise the offensive stench. But the egea is able to eliminate the source of offensive stench.

“The zinc ricinoleat (Zn(Ri)2) is a derivative product from surfactant which is derived from ricinoleic acid (12-hydroxy-9-cis-octadecenoic acid), which can be synthesized from castor oil (Ricinus communis),” he said.

He said that the development of the product will create economic benefits for the public as it will create new entrepreneurs, new businesses, job opportunities, improve the public welfare, and help generate higher economic growth. “The product will have a strong demand from the local market as many people have to deal with problems of offensive odors in the things they use every day.
