RI-made Bioavtur Undergoes Smooth Test With CN-235-220

JAKARTA – Bioavtur made in Indonesia underwent the first test in CN-235-220 aircraft owned by PT Dirgantara Indonesia. What is the result?

Bioavtur is an alternative fuel for airplane turbine engines, which is made from crude palm oil (CPO). Indonesia is now developing that kind avtur by the name of bioavtur J2,4 under a cooperation between PT Pertamina (Persero), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), the oil palm plantation fund management board (BPDPKS).

The bioavtur is produced with the mixture of 2.4% refined bleached degummed palm kernel oil (RBDPKO) by using catalyst. The bioavtur, which is produced in the Treated Distillate Hydro Treating (TDHT) Refinery Unit (RU) 4 of Pertamina Cilacap, is named as Jet Avtur 2,4 (J2,4).

The bioavtur J2,4 has undergone a trial with CN-235-220 aircraft owned by PT Dirgantara Indonesia. Its test result concludes that the use of bioavtur J2,4 in CN-235-220 aircraft was proceeding normally. The series of ground run tests consists of variation tests of engine power up to setting engine power tests.

“The ground run test of about 20 minutes shows that a total of 50 liters of bioavtur consumed. Start engine with the right engine, and then with the left engine was all proceeding normally without any problem,” the aircraft testing pilot Captain Adi Budi Atmoko said in his review after conducting the test in Bandung recently, as reported by the ministry of energy and mineral resources (MEMR) in its website recently.

“Then there has been also no problem after undertaking the power test, with the first test from flight idle to maximum power. It seems the engine with the use of the bioavtur saw no problem. It has proven by the fact that until the maximum power we saw everything went smoothly without any problem with the engine, no jerks like resulted from contamination in the engine. All are going well,” added Adi.

Then there is also no problem after they conducted a test of engine power changes in slow and quick manner. The last test was the engine acceleration and deceleration test.  “The team conducted a test of acceleration and deceleration, from power idle to maximum power and then return to power idle moderately and quickly. We found no problem, no engine flim out, no jerks. All tests are proceeding smoothly and normally,” said Adi.

“The last test, which is the reverse test from maximum power to power idle then return to maximum power and to idle, also went smoothly,” Adi said.

After the ground run test, there will be test flight for 9 days with the CN-235-220 aircraft. The airplane will take off and land in Husein Sastranegara airport of Bandung, West Java.

The bioavtur has undergone twice static tests in the test-cell owned by PT. Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) AeroAsia by using the avtur of Jet A1 and bioavtur (J2,0 and J2,4) in the engine of CFM56-3 on 23-24 December 2020 and 24-25 May 2021, showing engine performance with the bioavtur (J2,0 and J2,4) at the same correlation with the use of Jet A1.

Indonesia, as the largest producer of palm oil in the world, is seeking to expand local market for palm oil through the production of biodiesel and bioavtur. (*)
