Many people claim that the most environmentally destructive plant is oil palm tree with a number of reasons. But its reality shows that oil palm plantations can produce around 4.0 tons of palm oil per hectare per year if compared to other vegetable oils, which can only produce at the average of around 0.7 ton per hectare per year.
Currently, the world needs vegetable oils at hundreds of millions of tons per year. Imagine, without the palm oil how many hectares of land must be used to produce the vegetable oils?
Why should be palm oil?
The most land efficient
Having a total acreage of only 11% of the total areas of the world’s four main vegetable oils with a relatively less expansion, the palm oil is far more efficient in land use compared to other oil crops.
Much higher productivity
The oil palm productivity is much higher, as it can produce 3.91 tons per hectare, while soybean, rapeseed and sunflower only average at 0.7 ton per hectare. This shows that the oil palm is the most land efficient and the most eco-friendly. With much less land use, oil palm plantations can produce much more oil.
