GAPKI Seeking To Maximize Hannover For Palm Promotion

JAKARTA – The Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) will take part in the industrial exhibition of Hannover Messe in Germany on 17-21 April 2023 to show to the world the sustainability practices in the palm oil industry of Indonesia.

During the world’s largest exhibition of industry technology, GAPKI will feature the technology of methane capture, which is used by the Indonesian palm oil industry to capture methane gas resulted from burning palm wastes. With the use of the technology, the palm oil industry can minimize the greenhouse gas emissions from the palm oil processing.

“GAPKI will also show to the world that Indonesian palm oil industry does not cause deforestation. We always comply with prevailing regulations to protect the environment, especially forests,” Lolita Bangun of GAPKI’s foreign relations division said during the FMB9 dialog on ‘Ecofriendly Future Industry, Hannover Messe 2023’ on Monday, 27 March 2023.

According to her, GAPKI has been also trying to reduce emissions through the use of palm biomass as a source of clean energy and help realize the concept of zero waste. “Hopefully, through the exhibition the European society will understand that Indonesian palm oil industry has been managed with the principles of sustainability,” she said.

Lolita admitted that Indonesia’s palm oil industry, which employs around 16 million workers, is heavily reliant on the exports. “It is projected that in 2033 the palm oil industry will employ around 25 million workers. It means its export reliance will be even higher,” she said.

She mentioned the recent trade restriction by European Union (EU) against the palm oil, especially its latest deforestation law approved last December 2022. “It’s a global challenge that the industry has to face. Concerning this, GAPKI wants to make the international community understand the sustainability of our palm oil industry,” she said, adding that the palm oil industry has been also progressing on the use of clean energy.

Expected to be attended by around 100,000 visitors from around the world, the Hannover Messe 2023 will feature 4,000 exhibitors, including 300 startups, who will show around 8,000 innovative products from various countries.

From Indonesia, the industry ministry has prepared 157 co-exhibitors to take part in the Hannover Messe 2023.
