Pertamina Develops Palm-Based Refineries To Cut Emissions

JAKARTA – The state-owned company (BUMN) PT Pertamina, through its subsidiary PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI), has developed its green refinery to produce eco-friendly energy products, which are aimed to reduce carbon emissions as part of its efforts to help the government in realizing the target of net zero emission (NZE) in 2060.

PT KPI President Director Taufik Aditiyawarman said that the development of the green refinery is part of its commitment to realize the Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs) point 7 which is ‘clean and affordable energy’, and its commitment to ensure the national energy security and help realize the Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2060.

“The green refinery development is the realization of KPI’s commitment to produce quality and environmentally-friendly fuel products,” Taufik said in a written statement received by Jakarta Daily on Saturday, 15 July 2023.

He said that the green refinery will use refined bleached deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) as feedstock to produce green fuels. “In the future, it can be also developed to use the used cooking oil (UCO) as feedstock to produce  biofuel,” he said.

According to him, its green refinery in Cilacap, Central Java province, has managed to process green fuel with a production capacity of 3.0 thousand barrels per day (KBPD) from the feedstock of RBDPO into Green Diesel 100 percent named Pertamina Renewable Diesel (Pertamina RD). The Pertamina RD has been now on sale at the domestic market and had been used to meet the need of Renewable Power of Generator Set (Genset) used in the EWTG G20, and Formula E World Championship. It had been also exported to European market in 2022.

Another green fuel that can be produced through the green refinery is the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) or bio-avtur for airplanes, which had successfully undertaken flight test in 2022 with CN235 and is expected to continue with commercial flight test in the near future with one of the airplanes of Indonesia’s largest airline company.

The green refinery in Cilacap will be expanded with the development of green refinery phase-2 to increase production capacity to 6.0 KBPD with additional variant of feedstock, namely the Used Cooking Oil (UCO). The phase-2 is expected to be onstream in 2026.

Besides in Cilacap, Pertamina will also develop the green refinery in Plaju, South Sumatra, with production capacity of 20 KPBD of Pertamina RD (HVO), Bioavtur (SAF), and BioNaphta, which is targeted to be completed in 2027. (*)
