BRIN Prepares Plan B If El Nino Lingering

Jakarta – The National Research and Innovation Board (BRIN) said that  Indonesia has to prepare a number of needed scenarios in dealing with the El Nino, especially if it still lingers to disrupt the production of foods.

BRIN Chairman Laksana Tri Handoko made the statement after attending the “BRIN Mendengar (Listen)” event in Gedung Nayaka Loka, Kebun Raya Candikuning, Tabanan regency of Bali province on Monday, 07 August 2023.

“Regarding the El Nino, we from BRIN have been always involved in the limited meeting with President. Our discussions include about how to anticipate the impacts of El Nino to our food resilience,” Handoko said.

He said that it is still uncertain whether  El Nino will come, and what will be its impacts, despite being predicted by BMKG. “But we have to get ready by preparing a number of scenarios to deal with the El Nino and its impacts to our food production, especially it will continue longer than predicted,” said Handoko.

Handoko said that actually BRIN has prepared a number of scenarios. “First scenario, the most positive one, when the El Nino will not hit too long, so that its impact will not be too heavy on our food production. But we don’t rule out the possibility that EL Nino will linger longer than expected. But so far, it’s moderate,” Handoko said.

Meanwhile, during the same occasion Bali Governor I Wayan Koster said that his provincial government has been continually in coordination with all local governments and related stakeholders in dealing with the El Nino and its impacts.

Koster hopes that the El Nino can be mitigated. “We’ve been in coordination with BMKG, local governments, especially agricultural services. We hope when it comes its impacts will not be as heavy as that of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Koster.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and  Geophysics Board BMKG has predicted that there will be an increase of temperature in many areas of Indonesia as the impacts of the El Nino. It predicted that the peak of dry season will hit from August to September 2023. (*)
