Luhut Happy, 1,870 Palm Oil Firms Comply With ‘Siperibun’

Jakarta – A total of 1,870 palm oil companies have reported their plantation business data to the government through an online self-reporting system called ‘Siperibun’ (sustainable plantation monitoring system).

The self-reporting system was established by the Indonesian government recently, following the decision of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to set up a palm oil task force (Satgas Sawit), which is aimed to improve the governance in the Indonesian palm oil industries and optimize state income from the economic sector.

Based on data from the palm oil task force, which is led by Maritime and Investment Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and Finance Deputy Minister Suahasil Nazara as his deputy, as of 03 August 2023 there had been 1,870 palm oil companies that had reported their plantation businesses according to the Siperibun system.

The business documents reported by the companies are related to location permits, plantation business licenses, and land cultivation rights (HGU), spatial map. The companies are also required to inform the current realization of their plantation areas.

Minister Luhut said that the enthusiasm of palm oil companies in reporting their plantation businesses is a step forward in supporting the government to improve the palm oil industry governance in Indonesia. “I highly appreciate the companies that have participated in the self reporting mechanism. It’s part of their commitment for transparency and support the government’s efforts to improve the industry’s governance,” Minister Luhut said in a press release issued on Friday, 04 August 2023.

He said that the data from the Siperibun will be used for the evaluation of the palm oil sector. With the Siperibun system, the government hopes that all palm oil industry players will get greater understanding on the importance of plantation data for evaluation and improvement that will then further strengthen the sustainability of Indonesian palm oil industry.

“We hope the active participation of all stakeholders in the palm oil industry will further push all players towards realizing more sustainable and responsible operations of palm oil industries in Indonesia,” said Luhut.

According to him, Satgas will verify the data given by the palm oil companies through the ‘Siperibun’ system. “All of the information given by the companies will be matched with the internal data of Satgas. If necessary, we’ll summon the companies for clarification.”

“So, we hope all palm oil companies will seriously and accurately report their business data. That way we can improve the governance in the palm oil industries. I can assure you that the government will take firm action against any company that does not support our efforts to improve the palm oil governance,” he said. (*)
