JAKARTA – A total of 72 companies holding forest utilization business permit (PBPH) have proposed their work programs on carbon absorption and storage and other environmental services.

The environment and forestry ministry’s (KLHK) Sustainable Forest Management Director General Agus Justianto said that of the total 72 companies, 32 companies had been approved by the KLHK. “Forestry sector is now ready to implement the carbon trading with a view to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.
According to Agus Justianto, the government has prepared all instruments needed to implement the carbon economic value, including the carbon trading in forestry sector and other land uses (FoLU).
“The holders of PBPH should also meet the requirements set in the business. We would like to ask for help and support from the media to inform the public to accelerate the implementation of the carbon emission and trading,” Agus said last week.
The KLHK statement clarified the statement voiced by the Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association
(APHI) regarding the carbon trading and the methodology of the national registry system (SRN), which is considered not yet complete and poses challenges in implementing the carbon economic value.
“The instruments to implement carbon trading in the subsector of PBPH are now ready, including the methodology in the registry system,” he said.
“As a sector which is expected to give the biggest contribution, almost 60% of the total reduction of greenhouse emissions, the companies of PBPH have prepared themselves, and perhaps they are the most prepared, to implement the carbon trading, especially in terms of legality, performance, RKU, human resources, areas of mitigating actions, funding, etc,” said Agus.
The companies’ work programs for mitigating actions to absorb and store carbon through various activities, including intensive silviculture, Reduce Impact Logging Carbon (RILC), planting, engineering, environment rehabilitation, forestry partnerships and mitigating actions to reach target of FoLU.
