Govt Implements FOLUR Program To Keep Palm Sustainability

JAKARTA – The Indonesian government will implement the program of Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR), which is aimed to develop an integrated and sustainable landscape and efficient value chain of commodities, including palm oil, in Indonesia.

During the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirate (UAE), the economic coordinating ministry’s Expert Staff in charge of connectivity, services and natural resources development, Musdhalifah Machmud said that currently Indonesia needs the integrated landscape management to ensure the sustainability of its four main commodities, namely palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and rice.

“The FOLUR is aimed to strengthen sustainability in the production system of commodities and foods, land restoration, land use through integrated landscape management to gain various benefits,” Musdhalifah said in a press statement issued on Monday (11/12).

According to him, it also includes the increase of social benefits from every stage of production from on farm until reaching consumers, with positive or neutral impacts to the environment.

“This collaborative approach involves comprehensive land use, which links biodiversity conservation, restoration and production in big scale. Besides, smallholders also play an important role in maintaining the long term sustainability of commodities,” said Musdhalifah.

Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry, Alue Dohong said that Indonesia is committed to implementing low-carbon emissions in the sectors of agriculture, forestry, and land use as part of climate actions, including in the production of the four main commodities as the focus of FOLUR program.
