Govt Urged To Set Up Palm Oil Special Board

JAKARTA – Indonesian palm oil business players urged the government to establish a special board in charge of the country’s top commodities, including palm oil. They said that under the special board the management of the top commodities can be more focused on maximizing the benefits of the commodities for all stakeholders.

“Indonesia needs a national special board to manage our top commodities, which is directly under President. Hopefully it will be soon realized,” the Association of Indonesian Vegetable Oils Industries’ (GIMNl) Executive Director Sahat Sinaga said during a public discussion on the reflection of palm oil industry 2023 and future challenges, which was organized by Rumah Sawit Indonesia (House of Indonesian Palm Oil — RSI) at The Westin, Jakarta, on Wednesday (10/1).

He said that palm oil industry players also support the presidential decree (Kepres) of 9/2023 on the task force for improving the governance of palm oil industry and optimizing state income from taxes and non-tax in the palm oil industry. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) established the palm oil task force (Satgas Sawit) in April 2023. He appointed Maritime and Investment Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Panjaitan as the chairman of the Satgas Sawit.

But Sahat said that the new special board will be also in charge of other main commodities with the aim of maximizing income for the state and benefits for industries and the public. “This special commodity board will not only manage palm oil, but also other top commodities. So, it will be in charge of 20% of Indonesia’s GDP,” he said.
