RI Introduces FOLUR In Dubai Climate Change Conference

JAKARTA – Indonesia introduced its program of the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) during the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) di Dubai, the United Arab Emirate in December 2023.

The economic coordinating ministry’s Expert Staff on Connectivity, Development of Services and Natural Resources,  Musdhalifah Machmud said that the FOLUR is aimed to improve the sustainable and integrated landscape and efficient supply chain of commodities’ values in Indonesia.

Musdhalifah Machmud said that the management of integrated landscape in Indonesia is now very important to ensure the sustainability of production of four commodities, namely palm oil, cocoa, coffee, and rice.

“We aim FOLUR to strengthen the sustainability in the system of commodities and foods, land restoration, and governance on land  use through the management of integrated landscape to gain various benefits,” Musdhalifah said in a press release recently in Jakarta.

According to her, it will also include the increase of social benefits and profits in every stage of production from the farm to consumers, with positive impact or neutral to the environment.

“This collaborative approach involves a comprehensive use of lands which links conservation of biodiversity, restoration, and production in big scale. Besides, smallholders also play an important role in maintaining the long term sustainability of commodities,” she said.

Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong also stated that Indonesia is strongly committed to implementing low carbon economy in the sectors of agriculture, forestry, and land use as part of climate action, including on the four commodities as the main focus of FOLUR program.

Besides, during inter-minister meeting, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani urged all stakeholders to show their joint commitment in opening financial sources needed for implementing transformative actions of climate change.

“It’s not an easy task to tackle the climate change problems. Such actions need careful consideration and big financing,” she said. (*)
