RI Expected To Produce Bio-avture  100% In 2026

JAKARTA – Indonesia is projected to be able to produce bioavture for aviation industry fully 100% from the  refined bleach deodorized palm kernel oil (RBDPKO) in 2026.

Jisman Parada Hutajulu, Acting Director General of New & Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the ministry of energy and mineral resources (MEMR), said Indonesia has conducted a series of tests, including the flight trials using the bioavture in October 2023.

“We’ve used the bioavture in flight trial with an airplane of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia. The trial was successful,” he said during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (18/1/2024).

According to him, the government will increase the trial use of bioavture in aviation after the success of the flight trial with the use of bioavture (Sustainable Aviation Fuel —SAF). It is produced by Pertamina Group in its Cilacap Green Refinery, Central Java province, with a mixture of 2.4% palm oil.

PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI), a Refining & Petrochemical subholding company of Pertamina Group, has recently announced that they have targeted to produce bioavture 100% fully from palm oil in 2026.

PT KPI President Director Taufik Aditiyawarman said that to reach the production target of bioavture 100%, his company is now finalizing the phase-2 development of Cilacap Green Refinery.

“We’re now working on the next phase of development in our refinery, so that we can start producing the bioavture 100% in 2026. We’ll ensure that once on stream in 2026, the refinery can be operated with multiple feedstocks, which allow other types of raw materials,” he told CNBC Indonesia during the Energy Corner program recently.

He said that production of bioavture 100% will not only rely on the raw material from palm oil, but also from other sources such as used cooking oil and animal fats.

He said that in 2030 Indonesia will possibly apply the mixture of 5% bioavture. If the bioavture production from local refinery oversupplied then it can be exported.

“There is an opportunity of exporting, although at home we’ll only set the 5% of mandatory requirement for airlines. But we have to consider the demand in foreign countries, which have used the bioavture before. This is an opportunity to get revenue from bioavture export in the future,” he said. (*)
