JAKARTA – Indonesia and Norway have started a performance-based funding for reduction of greenhouse emissions from cutting deforestation in Indonesia during the period of 2019-2020.

“We’ve just discussed about the beginning of the 4th result-based contribution or payment as a reward for Indonesia for its good performance in reducing deforestation, or REDD+,” Environment and Forestry (LHK) Minister Siti Nurbaya told the press in Jakarta on Monday (12/02/2024).
She said that her meeting on Monday with Norway’s Ambassador to Jakarta, Rut Kruger Giverin marked the start of the process of the 4th result-based payment, which is expected to be finalized in September this year. “We expect the disbursement of the funding by the end of this year or early next year,” she said.
According to her, the process will be concerned with verification and recalculation of emissions. “Actually, for us the main issue is not about the money, but the Norway’s recognition that Indonesia has realized a good performance in mitigating climate change impact. I think that is the most important for us,” said Siti.
During the occasion Norwegian Ambassador Rut said that they are proud of the collaboration with Indonesia in mitigating carbon emissions.
“Indonesia has shown to the world that it has led by example on how to cut emissions through the reduction of deforestation. It’s something that should be recognized globally,” she said.
In October 2022, Norway had realized its first payment based on Indonesian performance at a total of US$56 million or around Rp876 billion. In December 2023, Norway also realized the 2nd such payment at a total of US$100 million our around Rp1.56 trillion. Then the third such payment at US$156 million or around Rp2.4 trillion was realized in January this year. The funding is a follow-up step to the cooperation agreement signed by Indonesia and Norway in 2022. (*)
