KLHK: RI Reaches Lowest Deforestation in 2021-2022

JAKARTA – The ministry of environment and forestry’s (KLHK) Sustainable Forest Management Director General Agus Justianto has ensured that the Indonesian government will keep implementing all necessary steps to reduce deforestation while utilizing the forests with sustainability principles.

“For example, a number of indicators of development performance in the forestry sector can be attributed to the reduction of greenhouse gas emission in the forestry sector. One of them is the achievement to reduce deforestation up to the lowest level in the history of Indonesian forestry,” Director General Agus said when addressing the seminar to celebrate the national press day (HPN) in Jakarta on Sunday (18/02/2024).

Based on data from KLHK, Indonesia’s net deforestation in 2021-2022 only reached 104,000 hectares, as compared to 113,500 hectares during 2020-2021. The deforestation of 104,000 hectares in 2022 was the lowest level in the history of Indonesian forestry.

Indonesia reached the highest level of deforestation during the periode of 1996 – 2000 at 3.5 million hectares per year, while at the periode of 2002-2014 reached 0.75 million hectares per year.

Besides conservation and reduction of deforestation, the government has been continually pursuing efforts of transformation in the context of forestry use. One such efforts include the scheme of forestry multi-business, which is not only focused on timber production but also on landscape-based forestry management.

The forestry multi-business is part of the implementation of an integrated forestry management system which increases land productivity through a variety of forestry businesses that produce forestry products and environment-related services.

The government has also expanded the access to utilize forestry, not only for corporations but also for the general public through the scheme of social forestry.

The KLHK data shows that until now it has issued 9,642 licenses on social forestry, which allow 1,288,004 heads of family to use 6.3 million hectares of forestry areas across Indonesia. (*)
