JAKARTA – The maritime and investment coordinating ministry (Kemenko Marves), in collaboration with PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) and Yogyakarta Special Provincial Government, organized a focus group discussion on development of circular economy through revitalization of critical lands in Yogyakarta on Thursday (21/03/2024.

Kemenko Marves’ Deputy in charge of environment and forestry management coordination, Nani Hendiarti said that it is aimed to realize the government’s commitment in increasing the use of new and renewable energy sources in Indonesia. “The renewable energy sources include the use of biomass during energy transition period in Indonesia,” the Deputy said.
She said that Kemenko Marves has wanted to syncronize, coordinate and control the use of biomass as a renewable energy source to meet biomass target in national energy transition. “To realize our goal, we need to keep pursuing efforts of empowerment, inform and advocate the implementation of policy, and set the standard of biomass products based on sustainability principles,” she said.
According to her, Kemenko Marves had also pushed the ministry of energy and mineral resources (MEMR) to issue the energy and mineral resources minister regulation (Permen ESDM) No.12/2023 on the utilization of biomass as an ingredient of fuel mixture for the co-firing project in coal-fired power plants (PLTU) owned by state-owned electricity company PT PLN.
The minister regulation had been informed during the COP 28 in Dubai in December 2023. It had been quickly followed up by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PT PLN EPI and a supplier of biomass.
“It shows to the international community that the Indonesian government is very serious in shifting its energy consumption from coal to renewable energy,” said Nani.
Nani said that the biomass will be resourced from trees planted in critical and degraded lands, as well as multi forestry businesses across the country. “In this case we need to set up cooperation between the government and state-owned companies (BUMN), and other related stakeholders to develop our circular economy,” she said.
PLN EPI President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara said that the use of biomass is a realization of PLN’s commitment in increasing the contribution of renewable energy in the national energy mix up to 23% in 2025. (*)
