ILO, GAPKI Kaltim Hold Training On Occupational Safety

SAMARINDA – The Indonesian Palm Oil Association’s (GAPKI) East Kalimantan (Kaltim) Office collaborated with the Internasional Labor Organization (ILO) Indonesia to conduct a two-day training on occupational safety and health (K3) risk assessment and policy making for the palm oil sector. It is a continuation of the previous two trainings held in August 2023 and October 2023.

Based on a press release received by TribunKaltim.co, during its opening ceremony ILO Indonesia Office Head Januar F Rustandie urged the training participants to improve their occupational safety and health policies and implementation in their respective companies and oil palm plantations.

Also addressing the opening ceremony, Sumarjono Saragih, the Head of  Human Resources Division at GAPKI’s Central Executive Board, said that the training also functions as a forum for participants to share experiences in tackling problems related to the K3 and the necessary knowledge in managing the K3 in their respective plantations.

“There are around 16 million people employed in the palm oil sector. We need a clear and appropriate policy in managing the occupational safety and health in the palm oil industries. So, this is the right forum to discuss about it and share knowledge and experiences regarding the K3 management,” he told participants of the two-day training on Monday and Tuesday (1-2/4/2024).

GAPKI Kaltim Office Secretary Rachmat Perdana Angga said that GAPKI and ILO Indonesia have long collaborated in improving the condition of occupational safety and health in the oil palm plantations, and so far their cooperation has been progressing well as expected. “This is a continuation of our cooperation that has been long established. Hopefully, all participants are encouraged to continue improving the condition of occupational safety and health in the palm oil sector,” he said. Meanwhile, Kaltim province’s Manpower and Transmigration Service Head Rozani Erawadi said that there are still many plantation companies which claimed “zero accidents”, but in fact there were still cases of accidents. “If we check the data of BPJS KetenagaKerjaan (Insurance Institution for workers), we still found cases of accidents every month. So this K3 training can provide necessary information for the palm oil industry players to prevent and anticipate accidents,” he said. (*)
