JAKARTA – Environment and Forestry (LHK) Minister Siti Nurbaya inaugurated the information center of peatland standard and science and technology at the “Camppeat KHDTK Tumbang Nusa”. The peatland center is located in Tumbang Nusa village of Jabiren Raya district in Pulang Pisau regency of Central Kalimantan (Kalteng) province.

“This location has become a center of knowledge, center of learning, and center of best practices on peatlands. Almost all references of peatlands mention Indonesia, despite not yet in depth. Hopefully, this center will further deepen our study and knowledge on peatlands, and share peatland information internationally,” Minister Siti said when inaugurating the peatland study center on Saturday (20/04/2024).
According to her, the peatland center will also function as a means to apply standard, field training and education, meeting and scientific tourism regarding peat forests.
The center, which is built on a land area of 1,564 square meter of the 5.0 hectare camp area of KHDTK Tumbang Nusa, is an integrated and representative facility that can provide information on the standard and science and technology on peat forest management and the KHDTK Tumbang Nusa.
It is initiated by the board of environment and forestry instrument standard application (BPSILHK) Banjarbaru, which functions as one of the technical implementation units (UPT) of the board of environment and forestry instrument standardization (BSILHK).
She underlined the importance of the BSILHK for KLHK and Indonesia as it functions to control various work standards on environment. “So, whenever there is problem, I ask BSILHK whether it is already in line with standards or not. BSILHK stands on the front line of supervision. Then after that directorate general that can provide technical responses. And when it comes to legal case, it will be handled by LHK legal enforcement directorate general,” she said.
Siti further said that there is an important link between forest, peatland, climate and carbon. “Currently, solving the climate change problems should be through the two approaches of conservation and welfare. It’s impossible to deal with the climate change without lifting the public welfare,” she said.
“Its management design should involve the public, especially the young generation. We’ll invite the local people, including the youngsters, to take part. Technically, it’s been good. We’ll also organize international events here,” she said.
Looking forward, she said that the peatland center is expected to increase public awareness on the importance to preserve the ecosystem of peat forest. (*)
