Only Palm Oil Has Sustainability Certification

Palangka Raya – The Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (PASPI) Executive Director Tungkot Sipayung said that palm oil is the only vegetable oil in the world, which has the system of sustainability certification.

“It’s only palm oil among the seven main vegetable oils in the world, which has the system of sustainability certification. The others are not sustainably certified,” Tungkot said during a discussion on the book of palm oil myths and facts at Palangka Raya University in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan province, on Friday (08/03/2024).

He said that Indonesia as the world’s largest producer of palm oil should be able to maintain the sustainability of its palm oil production.

He dismissed the accusations that palm oil is not environmentally friendly, wasteful of water, causing high cholesterol, and other negative campaigns against the palm oil, which he said are not based on scientific researches and data. “It’s not true. Palm oil isn’t water wasteful, high cholesterol, or damage environment. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, Europe is four times higher than Indonesia. Compared to other vegetable oils, palm oil contribution to the greenhouse gas emission is low,” he said.

“They just want to utilize the environmental and social issues to denigrade palm oil with the aim to outcompete it at the global market. Palm oil is not a perfect oil, but surely it’s better than its competitors,” he said. (*)
