Biodiesel Use Reduces Emissions, Govt Plans New Upgrade

JAKARTA – The ministry of energy and mineral resources (MEMR) has reported that the use of biodiesel had managed to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) in Indonesia

“Based on annual calculation, the use of biodiesel from B20 until the current B35 had reduced carbon emission up to 10 million tons of CO2,” the MEMR’s Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Director General Eniya Listiani Dewi  said during a special dialogue on strategy to increase competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil through downstreamingon on Thursday (06/06/2024).

She said that due to the successful implementation of biodiesel program the government decided last year to upgrade the mandatory biodiesel program to biodiesel 35 percent (B35). Currently, the carbon emissions dropped up to 33 million tons of CO2.

“We hope that along with the increase use of biodiesel through upgrading program, it will further reduce the carbon emissions,” she said.

According to Eniya, Indonesia will further increase the use of biodiesel in vehicles.

She said that currently Indonesia is in the process conducting road test of B40. It is part of the government plan to upgrade the use of biodiesel from the current B35 to B40.

“This year we plan to conduct its test in non-automotive sectors. In the automotive sector if we compare to the result of mandatory B35, there is nothing significant,” said Eniya.

“The use of B40 with the condition of B30 and B10 has no significant impact on the changes of time, volume, and dimension or rubber inside materials,” said Eniya. (*)
