JAKARTA – Economic Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the implementation of biodiesel 40 percent (B40) can save foreign exchange up to Rp404.32 trillion. According to Airlangga, with the availability of B40, Indonesia can reduce its reliance on import of diesel fuel and as a result save foreign exchange.
“Currently, we’re implementing B35. But we’re ready to upgrade it to B40. It can reduce our import of diesel fuel, and save our foreign exchange up to Rp404.32 trillion,” Airlangga said when addressing the Green Initiative Conference 2024 in Jakarta on Tuesday (24/09/2024).
He said that for the current production of B35, the government had allocated it at a total 13.4 million kiloliter. The government has planned to start upgrading the current B35 mandatory program to B40 program since 2025. The B40 is a blending of 60 percent fossil diesel fuel and 40 percent fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) processed from palm oil.
Airlangga said that during the period of 2018-2024, the volume of biodiesel already distributed had reached 63.04 million kiloliter.
The biodiesel mandatory program has also helped the government in fulfilling its commitment to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at 538 million tons from the energy sector or 12.5 percent from the scenario of business as usual (BAU) in 2030.
According to Airlangga, the implementation of B40 will be able to accelerate the energy transition in Indonesia toward reaching net zero emission (NZE). “To accelerate it, we’re now ready to implement the B40 program next year,” he said. (*)
