RI’s Carbon Trade Reaches Rp78b, Exceeding Malaysia, Japan

JAKARTA – Since its formal operation on 26 September 2023, the Indonesia Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon) has managed to achieve a total transaction volume of carbon trading at 1.59 million tons of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e), with a total value of Rp77.91 billion as of 17 April 2025.

“Our carbon transaction volume reached nearly 1.6 million tons of CO₂ with a total value of approaching Rp80 billion,” the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) President Director Iman Rachman said during the CarboNEX 2025 Forum, which was organized by the IDX at the Main Hall BEI, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (22 April 2025).

He said that during the period of January – March 2025, IDXCarbon recorded carbon transaction volume at 690,675 tCO₂e, which increased significantly if compared to that in 2024 at 413,764 tCO₂e and 494,254 tCO₂e in 2023 since operation on 26 September 2023.

“The achievement made IDXCarbon as one of the biggest carbon market in Asian region in terms of carbon transaction volume,” he said.

But Iman admitted that the Indonesia’s carbon market is still far from the level of its maximum potential. “But so far, our achievement had exceeded the performances of our neighboring countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan,” he said.

“If we compare to our neighboring countries, our carbon trading volume is around seven times bigger than that of Malaysia, and twice higher than that of Japan,” he said, adding that the event has become a forum of education and sharing latest information about management of carbon emissions and carbon market mechanism.

Besides transaction value, there has been also a significant increase in the number of participants. “The number of users of the carbon bourse services drastically rose by 587%, from only 16 entities at the time of initial launching to 111 active users as of 17 April 2025,” he said.

The total volume of carbon already retired (from trading system for claim of emission reduction) reached 979,834 tCO₂e.

According to Iman, so far the IDXCarbon has been attractive enough as there have been a number of project owners abroad, who wanted to register for trading of credit carbon in Indonesia. “Our focus now is to open Indonesian carbon trading unit for international audience,” he said.

He said until now there have been seven projects of emission reduction with the availability to be traded at 2,203,119 tCO2e.

Tackling Climate Change

Meanwhile, the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Deputy Chairman Eddy Soeparno said during the forum that the CarboNEX is not only a business forum, but it also stands as a strategic platform to strengthen political commitment to deal with the climate crisis.

“The CarboNEX has not only brought together business players, but also accelerated political steps in tackling problems of climate change,” said Eddy.

The ministry of environment/ environment control board (KLH/BPLH), the financial services authority (OJK), and the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) inaugurated Indonesia’s first carbon trading unit through the IDXCarbon on 20 January 2025. (*)
