JAKARTA – The Council of Palm oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) said that the real facts of palm oil has shown its strategic role as a solution and not the cause of problems of deforestation, energy, and food resilience.
“The palm oil is the most efficient and sustainable commodity in the world. It is the solution, not the cause of problems,” the Secretary General of CPOPC for the period of 2022–2025, Dr. Rizal Affandi Lukman, said during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (28/05/2025).
“The palm oil uses only 8.2% of total land areas of all oil crops that produce the total volume of vegetable oils in the world, but it produces 41.8% of total production of all vegetable oils in the world. Its higher productivity per hectare per year makes palm oil as the world’s most efficient and most environmentally friendly vegetable oil,” he said.
He added that Indonesia and Malaysia had seen a significant decrease of deforestation in their primary forests during the last five years in a row. It shows that the world’s largest producers of palm oil are strongly committed to continually improving their sustainability.
Currently, the palm oil contributes more than 50% of global exports of vegetable oils and fats, which are consumed in more than 160 countries across the globe. In 2023, the global production of palm oil reached more than 81 million tons, while Indonesia is the world’s largest producer, exporter and consumer of palm oil.
CPOPC also calls on the global communities to stop taking unilateral approaches against palm oil, and start developing new narratives based on the principles of fair global trade and the palm oil’s real facts, which include on efficiency, productivity, and sustainability.
“We shouldn’t be allowed to work alone. The future of this very important commodity lies in the cross-continental collaborations, standard harmonization, and support for smallholders,” said Dr. Rizal.
During the press conference, it was also announced that Izzana Salleh of Malaysia and Dr. Musdhalifah Machmud of Indonesia had been inaugurated as consecutively the new Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of CPOPC for the period of 2025–2028. (*)
