TANGERANG – PT Pertamina has formally conducted maiden flight using its Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) product, which is produced from Used Cooking Oil (UCO). The maiden flight was conducted by Pelita Air, an aviation subsidiary of Pertamina Group, with flight route from Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s terminal-3 in Jakarta to Denpasar, Bali on Wednesday (20/08/ 2025).
Pertamina President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri said that the Pertamina SAF is the realization of its commitment to reaching energy self-sufficiency and supporting the energy transition toward green and clean energy.
The Pertamina SAF used in the maiden flight is a sustainable aviation fuel, which is a blending of 2.5 percent of UCO and fossil fuel-based conventional avtur. Produced in Pertamina’s refinery of RU IV Cilacap, Central Java, Pertamina SAF is the first bioavtur production in Indonesia, which meets the international quality standard of DefStan 91-091.
”Pertamina SAF has been awarded with the certificate of International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) according to the standard of Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) from the collection of UCO as raw material, to production facility in refinery, and up to facilities of SAF transportation and distribution,” said Simon.
According to Simon, the Pertamina SAF has been also certified by the Renewable Energy Directive European Union (RED EU). All of the certifications have proven that the supply chain of Pertamina SAF has met the global standard of sustainability, and suitable to be used for international flights.
“Pertamina SAF marks the initial milestone of future business development for the company and for Indonesia. Pertamina as Regional Champion SAF is the only company able to create an SAF ecosystem from upstream to downstream sectors in
ASEAN region. Pertamina is also capable of producing SAF based on UCO with the catalyst called Merah Putih, which is the result of Pertamina’s formulation with the manufacturer of domestic catalyst,” said Simon.
Pertamina also managed to initiate and explore all of the SAF ecosystem certified with the ISCC from upstream to downstream. “We’ll replicate all that had been well implemented in our co-processing facilities of RU II Dumai in Riau province and RU VI Balongan, Indramayu, West Java. We’ll keep improving the supply chain of raw material, through Pertamina Patra Niaga, and the participation of the general public in the collection of UCO,” he said.
He said that the production activity is expected to open the opportunity for development of circular economy in regions in order to support the Indonesian economy as a whole. “We’ll also keep promoting the use of Pertamina SAF, especially by Pelita Air for domestic flights and by other airplanes for international flights,” said Simon.
According to Simon, Pertamina as the leading company in the implementation of the government’s program of energy transition, is committed to supporting efforts of realizing the target of net zero emission in 2060, by continually pushing for implementation of programs that will realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “All of such efforts are in line with the application of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) in all lines of businesses and operations of Pertamina,” he said.
“This achievement has shown that Indonesia is not only able to produce biodiesel (from palm oil), but also ready to become the world’s main producer of bioavtur,” added Simon.
The ministry of energy and mineral resources’ (KESDM) Secretary General Dadan Kusdiana said the government has listed bioavtur production as the government’s priority in energy downstreaming program. “Indonesia has become the king of biodiesel production in the world. With abundant supply of used cooking oil in our country, we have a big opportunity to become an international hub of SAF supply,” he said. (*)
