Getting to Know Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO) and Its Benefits
Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO) is oil mechanically extracted from the kernel of the oil palm fruit. This process differs from the production of Crude Palm Oil (CPO), which comes from the mesocarp (fruit flesh). While CPO is used for various food needs, CPKO is a main raw material for everyday products such as shampoo, soap, detergents, and many more. This article will discuss “Getting to Know Crude Palm Kernel Oil and Its Benefits” in more detail.
The Process of Processing Oil Palm Seeds into CPKO
The stages of processing oil palm seeds into CPKO involve several key steps:
- Fiber and Seed Separation Process
- The press residue from the Screw Press machine, still mixed with fiber and seeds, is transferred by Screw Conveyor to the Depericarper machine.
- The Depericarper separates the fiber from the seeds. This machine uses a blower to suck away the lighter fiber, while the heavier seeds fall into the Seed Polishing Drum.
- Next, the seeds are dried to remove remaining fiber and stored in a Nut Silo tank.
- Kernel Processing and Separation Process
- This step is similar to the CPO processing process, but differs in the early stage because the seeds have already been separated from the fruit.
- Seed Drying: Seeds stored in the nut silo are dried for 6-18 hours at a temperature of 6080C to soften their shells.
- Seed Grading: The dried seeds pass through a Nut Grading machine to be sorted by size.
- Seed Cracking: The sorted seeds are sent to a Ripple Mill to be cracked.
- Kernel and Shell Separation: The mixture of kernels, shells, and fine particles is separated through dry and wet processes.
- Kernel Drying: The separated kernels are dried in a Kernel Dryer for 1415 hours at a temperature of 6070C.
- Crude Palm Kernel Oil Extraction Process
- The analyzed and separated kernels are collected in a Kernel Bunker.
- The kernels are then fed into a Screw Press machine, where the oil (PKO) and press cake (PKM) are separated through mechanical pressing. Usually, this process is carried out twice to maximize oil extraction.
- The resulting crude oil is temporarily collected in a Strainer Tank and filtered using a Niaga Filter to separate remaining solids. After filtering, clean oil is obtained and stored in storage tanks.
Benefits of Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO)
CPKO can be further processed through Refining, Bleaching, and Deodorizing (RBD)) or fractionation to produce various end products, including:
- Food Industry: chocolate, chocolate spreads, margarine, butter spreads, cakes, instant noodles.
- Cosmetics Industry: lipstick, soap, shampoo.
- Fuel: biodiesel.
Other applications of palm kernel oil are still very diverse, but require large industrial facilities, specialized machinery, and storage tanks capable of maintaining specific temperatures. In addition, specialized tanker trucks are also needed for its transport.
