Roles and Responsibilities of Oil Palm Plantation Workers

Oil palm plantation workers play an important role in the success and sustainability of the palm oil industry. Their daily tasks are highly diverse and demand physical ability, skill, precision, and a deep understanding of plantation operations. The following are the main roles and responsibilities of oil palm plantation workers:

Harvesting Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB)

One of the main tasks of workers is harvesting ripe fresh fruit bunches from oil palm trees:

  • Workers use tools such as dodos (a long sickle) and egrek (a long-handled knife) to cut the bunches carefully without damaging the tree.
  • They must be able to identify optimally ripe bunches to achieve the best oil yield and quality.

Land Maintenance

The care of plantation land is essential for healthy plant growth:

  • Clearing old fronds and harvest residue for easier access and to reduce pest risk.
  • Carrying out fertilization and pesticide spraying in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Performing weed control activities to avoid competition for nutrients and water.

Nursery and Replanting (Rejuvenation)

At the nursery and young plantation stage:

  • Workers care for oil palm seedlings, ensuring adequate water, nutrition, and pest protection.
  • In replanting programs, workers are tasked with felling old trees, preparing the land, carrying out soil tillage, and applying erosion control techniques.

Collection and Transport

After harvesting, workers are responsible for:

  • Collecting fresh fruit bunches and loose fruits at collection points.
  • Helping transport FFB to the palm oil mill as quickly as possible so that quality does not decline.

Monitoring and Reporting

Workers also play a role in supporting plantation supervision by:

  • Reporting signs of pest attacks, plant diseases, or damage to plants.
  • Recording environmental changes, such as flooding or erosion, that may affect plantation conditions.

Safety and Environmentally Friendly Practices

Workers are required to:

  • Comply with occupational safety procedures, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, helmets, and boots.
  • Follow environmentally friendly practices, such as not burning land and helping protect conservation areas within the plantation.

Supporting Plantation Sustainability Goals

In modern plantations, workers support the achievement of sustainability goals by:

  • Attending training on sustainable oil palm cultivation practices.
  • Supporting waste management initiatives, maintaining buffer zones, and carrying out wildlife protection efforts.
