PRESS RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n The Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA), or Gabungan Pengusaha Kelapa Sawit Indonesia (GAPKI), and the Indonesian Workers Union and Palm Oil Workers Union Network (JAPBUSI) in conjunction with Labor Day celebration on 1 May 2020.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Workers and business players\u2019 joint solidarity: Fighting COVID-19 in Palm Oil Industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Labor day celebration on 1 May 2020 has reminded again the value of solidarity which has become the basis of workers\u2019 movement. It has become even more important amid the slowing economic growth and potential recession at global and national levels as a result of the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic. The wave of recession needs a cooperation among many sides, including the government, business players and workers, to survive the pandemic and quickly recover after the end of the crisis.<\/p>\n The second edition of the International Labour Organization\u2019s (ILO) report on Covid-19 and labor market on \u00a07 April 2020 said that the crisis caused by the Covid-19 is the worst since the Second World War. Almost all sectors will be impacted, depending on the scale of the Covid-19 pandemic in each country. It has really hit a number of top industries in Indonesia, leaving around 2.8 million employees under threat of being laid off or placed on unpaid leave, according to data of the manpower ministry on 13 April 2020.<\/p>\n Covid-19 preventive and mitigation efforts for palm oil industries, which involve various sides, should be pursued although the palm oil industry is still categorized as the industry that gets low to medium levels of impacts according to the ILO report. Despite of the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) in Jakarta and other provincial cities, the palm oil industries are still in operation. There is no yet any report of layoffs. But it should get necessary attention from stakeholders, labor union and employers.<\/p>\n The IPOA has initiated early steps through the Covid-19 preventive protocol for the palm oil industries, and also joint preventive protocol of Covid-19 with JAPBUSI, and Jejaring SP\/SB Sawit Indonesia. The initial version of the preventive protocol consists of preventing steps that should be implemented by the palm oil industries in Indonesia. The key factors of the preventing steps are the aspects of occupational health, and safety (K3). The protocol, which is a joint call from the workers and employers, has been distributed in palm oil producing regions and also among member companies of IPOA.<\/p>\n The protocol will be renewed by considering the latest condition of Covid-19\u00a0 which has been changing continuously. The IPOA step has been fully supported by JAPBUSI, a federation of nine labor unions in Indonesia, whose members include those working in oil palm plantations and palm oil processing industries, which are affiliated with four confederations, namely the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Union (Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Seluruh Indonesia –KSPSI), the Confederation of Indonesian Labor Union (Konfederasi Serikat Buruh Seluruh Indonesia — KSBSI), the Confederation of Indonesian Moslem Workers Union (Konfederasi Sarikat Buruh Muslimin Indonesia — Sarbumusi), and the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers Union (Konfederasi Serikat Pekerja Seluruh Indonesia — KSPSI Rekonsiliasi).<\/p>\n In conjunction with the celebration of Labor Day and the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia, GAPKI\/IPOA and JAPBUSI as a medium of communication among workers unions in the palm oil industries in Indonesia call on the industries to pay attention to several issues that are important to protect workers\u2019 rights and ensure the continual operation of the palm oil industries in Indonesia:<\/p>\n In dealing with the Covid-19, the policy on manpower and social dialogues among employers and workers union are the key in seeking a joint solution to fight the pandemic. It is in line with the circular of manpower ministry (MENAKER) No: M\/3\/HK.04\/III\/2020, which opens opportunities for employers and workers to reach agreement.<\/p>\n GAPKI\/IPOA and JAPBUSI have partnered in promoting the workers\u2019 rights in the palm oil sector as part of efforts to reach a sustainable palm oil industry and good works during the last few years through the socialization of regulations, social dialogues, trainings and sharing of best practices. GAPKI and JAPBUSI are committed to jointly pursuing efforts to improve the image of Indonesia\u2019s palm oil industries and to promote good works to improve the welfare of workers\u00a0\u00a0 in the palm oil industries and joint agenda to realize the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
