After being criticized by various groups, the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean office has finally corrected its online info-graphic flyers which advise certain foods during the outbreak of Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.<\/p>\n

The WHO\u2019s advice has drawn protests from a number of organizations, including the Indonesian Palm Oil Council (DMSI), the Indonesian Palm Oil Smallholders Association (Apkasindo), and the Indonesian Palm Oil Society (Maksi).<\/p>\n

The Indonesian government, through the ministry of foreign affairs, has also filed its protest against the online flyers issued by the WHO regional offices in Eastern \u00a0Mediterranean and Europe, through its representative in Jakarta.<\/p>\n

An objection letter had been also filed by the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) to the WHO. In the letter, the CPOPC pointed out six important points on the facts of the palm oil that had been verified by global experts of nutrition for years.<\/p>\n

Previously, the online flyers entitled “Nutrition advice for adults during Covid-19”, advised people not to consume foods that contained saturated fats, <\/em>\u00a0such as palm oil and coconut oil. But now, the WHO Eastern Mediterranean office had removed the information and revised the advice of “do not eat saturated fats” into “eat less saturated fats”. Even, it has omitted the palm oil from the list. The revised version of the info-graphic flyer is as follows: \u201ceat less saturated fats<\/em> (fatty meat, butter, coconut oil, cream, cheese, ghee, and lard<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The DMSI Chairman Derom Bangun said that palm oil is no longer mentioned in the flyer. \u201cBut the coconut oil<\/em>, which was previously mentioned, is still written in the flyer,” he said.<\/p>\n

Derom said that they sent a protest letter asking for a revision of the flyer. Apparently, the revision has been made.\u00a0 DMSI said that the palm oil has a balanced content between “saturated” and “monounsaturated”. \u201cHopefully, the revision will not affect the marketing and promotion of palm oil in other foreign countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Previously, the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) has also protested the WHO flyer, highlighting the nutritional benefits of palm oil and hitting back against the advice mentioned in the online info-graphic flyer. (*)<\/p>\n
