<\/p>\nJAKARTA \u2013 The agriculture ministry has reported that until the end of 2020 a total of 755 certificates of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) had been issued for oil palm plantation companies and smallholders in Indonesia. The 755 ISPO certificates consist of 735 certificates for private companies and state-owned companies as subsidiaries of PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN), and 20 certificates for smallholders.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s encouraging to see that there have been 20 certificates issued for smallholders, although previously they are only encouraged to get the certificates under voluntary mode,\u201d the agriculture ministry\u2019s Plantation Products Processing and Marketing Director Dedi Junaedi said during a public discussion in Jakarta on Monday, 07 June 2021.<\/p>\n
According to him, the certification process of sustainable palm oil has been also continually improving. Currently, there are 15 institutions of ISPO certification, 7 institutions of ISPO training, and 1,893 auditors of ISPO.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government has required all oil palm plantations to have ISPO certificates to ensure their sustainability at the global market. It is stipulated in the presidential regulation (Perpres) No.44\/2020 on the system of Indonesian sustainable palm oil (ISPO) certification.<\/p>\n
The ISPO certification is aimed to increase the management and development of the national palm oil industry based on the principles of sustainability. It is also intended to increase the competitiveness of the palm oil products at the global market and accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n
All oil palm plantation companies are obliged to have the ISPO certificate since the issuance the Perpres No.44\/2020, while smallholders are only required to get the ISPO certificates five years after the issuance of the Perpres.<\/p>\n
Dedi noted that the government is seeking to accelerate the ISPO certifications, particularly for the problematic acreages of oil palm plantations. \u201cThere are still around 3.4 million hectares of oil palm plantations that are indicated to have been overlapping with forest areas.<\/p>\n
To accelerate the certification, the agriculture ministry has been pursuing some efforts, which include evaluations of licensing and the replanting program for smallholders. The government has targeted to realize the replanting of around 540,000 hectares during the period of 2020 \u2013 2022. In 2020, only around 67,000 hectares were replanted, involving more than 28,000 smallholders. \u00a0(*)<\/p>\n
