<\/a><\/p>\nIt is based on objective analysis of the impacts of palm oil on global biodiversity, which offers the solution for the environmental conservation. The analysis was conducted by the palm oil task force of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).<\/p>\n
During a press conference of the economic coordinating ministry on Monday, 04 February 2019, the IUCN Palm Oil Task Force Head Erik Meijaard said that they had concluded based on their study that the other vegetable oils need land sites nine times bigger than that needed by the palm oil.<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, replacing the palm oil with other vegetable oils will very significantly increase the total land sites needed to produce the non-palm vegetable oils to meet the global need,\u201d Erik said when presenting the results of their study to Economic Coordinating Minister Darmin Nasution in Jakarta on Monday.<\/p>\n
Present during the press conference were Foreign Deputy Minister \u00a0Abdurrahman Muhammad Fachir, economic coordinating ministry\u2019s Deputy In Charge of Foods and Agriculture Coordination Musdhalifah Machmud, economic coordinating ministry\u2019s Deputy In Charge of International Economic Cooperation Rizal Affandi Lukman, the \u00a0Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) Executive Director Mahendra Siregar, representatives of related ministries\/government institutions, and representatives of the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI).<\/p>\n
Erik, who is the chief author of the study report,\u00a0 said that considering the impact of the palm oil to the biodiversity from the global perspective, then there is no simple solution.<\/p>\n
\u201cHalf of the global population use the palm oil as the source of foods. If we ban or boycott the palm oil, the other vegetable oils which need much bigger size of land sites will replace the palm oil,\u201d said Erik.<\/p>\n
According to him, considering the global market trend the palm oil will be continually needed. \u201cBut a number of necessary steps should be implemented to ensure the sustainability of palm oil production and all stakeholders \u2013governments, producers and all players along the supply chains, have to be committed to implementing the principles of sustainability,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The study report also stated that tropical areas in Africa and South America are potential areas for developing oil palm plantations. The areas are the habitats of around 54% of the world\u2019s endangered mammal species and around 64% of the world\u2019s threatened bird species.<\/p>\n
If the oil palm trees are replaced with other oil plants, its impact will be the damage to the ecosystem of tropical forests and savanna areas in South America.<\/p>\n
Minister Darmin welcomed the IUCN study results, saying that it will enlighten the public on the palm oil production. \u201cAmid variety of challenges facing the palm oil industries, especially in Indonesia, such scientific and objective data is badly needed to inform the public on the development of palm oil in Indonesia,\u201d Minister Darmin said.<\/p>\n
It is projected that the world will need 310 million tons of vegetable oils in 2050. Currently, the\u00a0 palm oil contributes 35% of the total global need of vegetable oils, with its largest consumers being India, China, and Indonesia. The palm oil consumption consists of 75% for foods industries, and 25% for cosmetics, cleaning products, biofuel, and others.<\/p>\n
Essential economic zone<\/strong><\/p>\nThe study also shows that the biodiversity in tropical forests consists of 193 rare species, such as orangutan, gibbons, elephants and tigers. The Indonesian government has also allocated the habitats for the rare species, consisting of national parks, nature reserves, wildlife reserves, and protected areas with conservation forests of 22.1 million hectares and protected forests of 29.7 million hectares. \u201cThe functions of the forest habitats should be optimized,\u201d said Darmin.<\/p>\n
Besides allocating the protected areas for the wildlife, the government has also allocated other areas to function like corridors of wildlife, essential economic zones, and high conservation values (HCV). In Indonesia, the allocation of land use to support life is 33% or 66 million hectares of the total land areas of Indonesia. Of the total, the oil palm plantation acreage is the largest one at around 14 million hectares, followed by rice fields at 7.1 million hectares, and the rest are for residential areas and other public facilities.<\/p>\n
Minister Darmin has also expressed the hope that the study should be followed with other studies to get more scientific and objective data and information on the palm oil. All of the studies should be always based on the targets of sustainable development goals (SDGs), which have been globally approved. (*)<\/p>\n
