Fadillah\u2019s impending visit is likely to be seen as a follow-up to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim\u2019s recent meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. During that visit, both had agreed to work together to fight the \u201cdiscrimination\u201d against the commodity.\u00a0Malaysia and Indonesia are the largest palm oil producing countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cMalaysia and Indonesia are committed to strengthening their\u00a0cooperation and collaboration on the oil palm (industry) through the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) with the entry of four observer countries — namely Colombia, Ghana, Honduras and Papua New Guinea —\u00a0to become full members,\u201d\u00a0Fadillah told reporters after officiating at the Malaysian Palm Oil Board\u2019s (MPOB)\u00a0annual Palm Oil Economic Review and Outlook Seminar (R&O) 2023 here today.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is hoped that the alliance of palm oil producing nations will be able to work synergistically in energizing CPOPC\u2019s roles as a more dynamic and impactful economic bloc in protecting our industry\u2019s interest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Fadillah said palm oil producing countries\u00a0have to be more coordinated in their efforts in conveying their\u00a0stand and stance on policy matters that\u00a0affect their socio-economic wellbeing.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this aspect, I am particularly referring to the European Union (EU) and the United States (US), the two economic blocs that are constantly throwing baseless allegations, demonizing our sustainable palm oil efforts and initiating embargo on our palm oil products with the aim of crippling our palm oil industry as a whole,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said\u00a0palm oil producers\u00a0must not act alone in facing these challenges, especially with the latest move by the EU. The bloc\u00a0has introduced a new legislation EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on the import of selected commodities including palm oil, linking it to deforestation and forest degradation.<\/p>\n
The new legislation, he noted, is expected to become a trade barrier. The commodity is subject to due diligence which is anticipated to increase administrative and production costs.<\/p>\n
In addition, the \u201ctraceability requirement\u201d is also expected to\u00a0impact\u00a0smallholders if they are excluded under the legislation. Smallholders en bloc is important\u00a0in the global supply chain, he said.<\/p>\n
Fadillah said Malaysia is\u00a0undertaking continuous improvements in oil palm cultivation and palm oil processing by adopting (various) initiatives, including\u00a0introducing the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification (MSPO),\u00a0made mandatory since Jan 1, 2020.<\/p>\n
EU may want to protect its own products by imposing various trade barriers\u00a0as palm oil is a very competitive commodity vis-\u00e0-vis the other vegetable oils and the pervasively weaker Malaysian ringgit against the USA dollar, he said.<\/p>\n
He said palm oil has become \u201cthe preferred edible oil\u201d, due to its pricing and versatile uses. Expanding and diversifying the oil palm industry and exploring market-specific uses of palm oil products will raise Malaysia\u2019s global market share for the commodity.<\/p>\n
Fadillah said the global demand for palm oil is also rising in tandem with the global economic recovery and this has increased demand for the commodity in both food and non-food sectors.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ongoing investment by palm oil players in palm-based oleo-chemicals and\u00a0value-added products will provide growth opportunities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Despite rising interest rates\u00a0and recession fears, the\u00a0overall market for Malaysian palm oil is expected to remain robust\u00a0supported by improvement in production, competitive prices and strong demand, he added.<\/p>\n
As for the anti-palm oil lobby, he said there may be a need to consider engaging experts to counter EU\u2019s accusations. The other option will be to \u201cstop\u00a0exports to EU and focus on other countries. We need to discuss this with Indonesia\u201d, he said. (*)<\/p>\n
