Palm oil has long been used throughout the food supply chain and in some parts of the world for hundreds of years but only lately has it earned widespread recognition for its benefits on health.<\/p>\n

The answer quite simply is that it is affordable. The sheer ability of the oil palm tree to keep producing oil bearing fruits has made it the preferred choice of vegetable oils globally. The extraordinary growth of the palm oil industry in the last two decades has however resulted in dubious questions on its health benefits and sustainability.<\/p>\n
There is a common misperception that palm oil is unhealthy because it is high in saturated fat. If this were the case, coconut oil and ghee both of which have high saturated fats would be bad for health but are they?<\/p>\n
The role of fats and its impact on human health is a complex one. The latest studies on the misperception that saturated fats is bad for health can be read in the linked article. Plant based fats like those from coconut and palm oil have a different impact compared to animal based saturated fats. Critics point to the level of deforestation in palm oil producing countries and blame it on the industry. This is a falsehood that achieved mythical proportions simply because the critics were selectively ignorant about what drives deforestation in the palm oil producing countries of Indonesia and Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Regardless of what these misinformed critics say, the facts as presented by Our World in Data shows that the global palm oil industry is responsible for a very small portion of global forest loss. Based on the dataset on all vegetable oils, Our World in Data explored how much land would be needed to meet the global demand for vegetable oils. The numbers as presented show that popular vegetable oils like groundnut would need 1.19 billion hectares, soybean, coconut and mustard under 500,000 million hectares while palm oil would only need 76.97 million hectares.<\/p>\n
This shows without a doubt that palm oil as a crop is the most sustainable source of vegetable oils for a global population that is expected to outstrip global capacities by 2050.<\/p>\n
Consumer Confidence in Certification<\/p>\n
In order to prove that palm oil is a sustainable crop, various initiatives have been undertaken to certify its production.<\/p>\n
Such initiatives include those taken by<\/p>\n
the leading palm oil producing countries of Indonesia and Malaysia. These two countries have introduced their national certification programs in the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) and Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) which have been implemented as part of national laws that govern the industries.<\/p>\n
These are solid commitments to sustainability which are un-matched by other vegetable oils. Soy for example, as the biggest competitor to palm oil in the global markets, has less than 2% of global production under the Roundtable on Sustainable Soy (RTRS) with no national or mandatory certification schemes in place.<\/p>\n
Additionally, reports have also shown that the palm oil industry has met 65% of its \u2018No deforestation commitments\u2019, while other edible oils are lagging behind with soybean at 11% and rapeseed and sunflower at 0%.<\/p>\n
These facts alone debunk the myths and misperceptions on palm oil that it is neither good for human or environmental health.<\/p>\n
As we head into an important year with COP27 expected to follow up on the climate change goals discussed at COP26, the achievements of the palm oil industries towards sustainability and the resulting contributions to the United Nations SDGs are undeniable. India with its massive consumer market can and should exert its influence on making its imports affordable for her citizens and sustainable for global citizens.<\/p>\n
