JAKARTA – The Council of Palm oil Producing Countries\u2019 (CPOPC) Secretary General Dr Rizal Affandi Lukman said that the statement on palm oil made by tech billionaire Bill Gate is totally misleading.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rizal stated that the Bill Gates\u2019 statement is not based on accurate data. \u201cApparently, he deliberately made such a misleading opinion to sway the public opinion and lead them into believing that the palm oil industry is the cause of deforestation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rizal was commenting on the statement made by Microsoft Corporation Founder, Bill Gates, who was recently quoted by several foreign media, including greenqueen.com.hk<\/a><\/em>, as saying that the palm oil is the cause of deforestation and should be replaced with a new synthetic palm oil, which is being developed by C16 Biosciences. The research company has been conducting a research and development (R&D) on the synthetic palm oil named C16 since 2017.<\/p>\n

Based in New York, the USA, the start-up company had received a total investment of US$20 million or around Rp283.18 billion from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which is financially supported by Bill Gates, Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg and Richard Branson of Virgin. The philanthropists claimed that they made such investment to save the earth from deforestations and carbon emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cPossibly, Gates is not yet informed that the palm oil has become the only vegetable oil in the world which is subject to a rigorous process of sustainability certification,\u201d said Rizal.<\/p>\n

According to Rizal, the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia have been pursuing various efforts to ensure that palm oil is produced based on the principles of sustainability. Such efforts include their decision to stop expanding the oil palm plantation acreage.<\/p>\n

Previously, The World Research Institute reported that deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia has been sharply decreasing since 2017. \u201cBoth Indonesia and Malaysia are strongly committed to raising productivity of the existing oil palm plantation areas without opening new plantation areas through national policies, which include the policy on sustainability certification,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rizal said it is better for Gates to ponder thoroughly the ecological functions of palm oil as reflected in its much higher efficiency, versatility and productivity compared to other vegetable oils.<\/p>\n

Due to its efficiency in land use, palm oil\u2019s productivity per hectare per year is 8 \u2013 10 times higher than other vegetable oils, including the sunflower, rapeseed and soybean as its main competitors at the global market. It is due to those facts, Nico Roozen, the founder of Solidaridad Network, has concluded that palm oil is the savior of the world from ecological disaster.<\/p>\n

Rizal said that palm oil is the only vegetable oil in the world that undergoes a rigorous certification of sustainability. The palm oil is subject to a number of mandatory certifications of sustainability, which include Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO), Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO), and the voluntary-based Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).<\/p>\n

Globally, there have been also other certifications, such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), Agriculture Sustainable Standard (SAN), International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), and High Carbon Stock (HCS) Approach.<\/p>\n

In realizing the sustainable production of palm oil to achieve the national food and energy resilience, the CPOPC Secretary General believes that the best solution can only be well formulated through a solid cooperation between the producing and consuming countries. (*)<\/p>\n
