<\/p>\nJAKARTA \u2013 The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Board (BMKG) reported that during the period of August – October 2024 La Nina is potential to hit Indonesia, where it is forecasted to pose a new climate challenge to the palm oil industries.<\/p>\n

La Nina, which is the reverse of El Nino, typically occurs every 3 to 5 years, but can occasionally occur\u00a0over successive years. The La Nina is a cooling period of ocean surface temperatures in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific regions. Usually, during the La Nina period, rainfalls will be higher in areas from Indonesia to the west coast of South America.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the La Nina phenomenon, the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) Chairman Eddy Martono said that the La Nina will affect the harvesting and transportation of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from oil palm plantations.<\/p>\n
\u201cCertainly, the evacuation of FFB will be disrupted. The more so, if the plantation areas are flooded. So, there is a possibility of production decrease. How much decrease? It will depend on the condition of each plantation area,\u201d Eddy said in Jakarta on Monday (5\/8\/2024).<\/p>\n
Despite the fact, Eddy said that La Nina will not necessarily increase the price of Crude Palm Oil (CPO) at global market. It could not become a catalyst of income increase for the palm oil companies.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt can raise the price if it causes a decrease of supply at the global market. But certainly, if the La Nina hits Indonesia, it will affect palm oil production,\u201d said Eddy.<\/p>\n
The Palm Oil Agribusiness Strategic Policy Institute (PASPI) Executive Director Tungkot Sipayung said that extreme La Nina will certainly affect the production of FFB. It is because the extreme La Nina will cause flooding, disrupt harvesting and transportation of FFB from the oil palm plantation areas.<\/p>\n
