The ex-logging areas have turned into scrublands with a social, economic and ecological degradation that has created pockets of poverty and underdevelopment. The presence of oil palm plantations has restored the lands and changed the lives of local people for the better economically, ecologically, and socially.<\/p>\n<p>Economically, the degraded lands that have been developed into oil palm plantations have become new centers of economic growth, generating regional economic growth, raising local people&#8217; income, contributing to the National GDP, contributing to national exports and state income, and improving the trade balance.<\/p>\n<p>Socially, the oil palm plantations help reduce rural and national poverty by creating job opportunities. The presence of oil palm plantations has also increased the access of community to infrastructure and social facilities, as well as education and health facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Ecologically, the oil palm plantations have restored the degraded lands, which were resulted from previous practices of unsustainable logging for decades.\u00a0 Actually, the presence of oil palm plantations rehabilitates the ecology of degraded lands due to logging and forest and land fires.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, oil palm plantations also restore ecological functions such as carbon sinks, and improve land fertility, soil and water conservation and the hydrological cycle.
