With a certain level of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), namely 3,000 to 5,000 mg\/liter with eH greater than -150 mVolt, the liquid waste has an optimal nutrient content without producing methane gas emissions (CH4).<\/p>\n
Efficiency and Reduction of Fertilizer Imports<\/strong><\/p>\n “By using the POME as organic fertilizer, we don\u2019t just utilize natural nutrients, but we can also reduce our import of chemical fertilizers from foreign countries,” Eddy said in a press statement in Jakarta on Monday (16\/12\/2024).<\/p>\n According to him, such technical application in oil palm plantations can greatly contribute to the country\u2019s national efforts of saving foreign exchange. The liquid waste also has the potential as a source of renewable energy.<\/p>\n In the LA practice, liquid waste is channeled to the plantation through a ditch system. This method has proven to be more cost-effective in terms of operational costs compared to non-LA methods, with potential profits ranging from Rp2.9 million to Rp5,5 million per hectare, as stated in the final report of Pusaka Kalam in 2024.<\/p>\n “The reduction of fertilizer imports will improve cost efficiency and increase the competitiveness of the palm oil industries. This will especially benefit the smallholders due to lower operational costs and potentially raise income from their fresh fruit bunches (FFB),” added Eddy.<\/p>\n Government\u2019s Support and Reduction of GHG Emission<\/strong><\/p>\n Eddy underlined the importance of government\u2019s support in maximizing the utilization of the POME for palm cultivation. By ensuring its best management, the LA can be the main solution in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially through reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and reducing the BOD of liquid waste. It is in line with the target of President Prabowo Subianto to achieve economic growth of 8 percent during his administration.<\/p>\n “If managed well, the implementation of LA can significantly contribute to reducing GHG emissions, along with other options such as methane capture,” he said.<\/p>\n The methane capture itself is a technology for capturing methane gas from the anaerobic decomposition process, which in addition to reducing GHG emissions, can also be used as a source of renewable energy.<\/p>\n Methane Capture vs Land Application<\/strong><\/p>\n Soil expert from Bogor University of \u00a0Agriculture (IPB), Dr. Ir. Basuki Sumawinata, M.Agr, explained that methane capture and land application have different roles and functions. Methane capture aims to capture methane gas produced from the decomposition process of liquid waste, while LA refers to the use of liquid waste to increase soil fertility.<\/p>\n “For LA application, the BOD of waste must be below 5,000 mg\/L. If waste is discharged into waters, the BOD standard is stricter, which is below 100 mg\/L,” said Dr. Basuki.<\/p>\n Although methane capture has advantages as an energy producer, Eddy hopes that this technology will not be mandatory for factories that want to utilize liquid waste for LA. “Methane capture is suitable for energy production, but its application should be adjusted to the needs of each factory,” he added.<\/p>\n Concrete Steps Towards Sustainable Management<\/strong><\/p>\n The Ministry of Environment is currently preparing a roadmap for reducing GHG emissions, especially methane, from the palm oil industries. Environment Minister Hanif Faisol, when visiting one of the palm oil mills in Pelalawan, Riau province, appreciated the good waste management practices, including the use of methane for power generation.<\/p>\n With well planned management of liquid waste, the Indonesian palm oil industries will not only contribute to the global efforts of mitigating global climate change, but will also improve Indonesia’s green reputation among the international community. The use of liquid waste through land application and methane capture techniques is a great opportunity to create an efficient, ecofriendly, and sustainable palm oil industry.
