{"id":29238,"date":"2025-01-18T15:24:06","date_gmt":"2025-01-18T15:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gapki.id\/en\/?p=29238"},"modified":"2025-01-30T15:33:36","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T15:33:36","slug":"ri-expects-eus-palm-policy-change-after-winning-case-in-wto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gapki.id\/en\/news\/2025\/01\/18\/ri-expects-eus-palm-policy-change-after-winning-case-in-wto\/","title":{"rendered":"RI Expects EU\u2019s Palm Policy Change After Winning Case In WTO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JAKARTA &#8211; Indonesia welcomed a ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in a case against European Union (EU) on palm oil-based biodiesel, expecting the bloc to adjust its regulations to comply with the ruling.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gapki.id\/en\/news\/2023\/11\/10\/feature-eudr-one-size-fits-all-ignoring-rightful-particularities\/eudr_palmoil_aprobi-or-id\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-26800\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-26800\" src=\"https:\/\/gapki.id\/en\/dir-site\/uploads\/2023\/11\/EUDR_palmoil_aprobi.or_.id_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"963\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gapki.id\/en\/dir-site\/uploads\/2023\/11\/EUDR_palmoil_aprobi.or_.id_.jpg 629w, https:\/\/gapki.id\/en\/dir-site\/uploads\/2023\/11\/EUDR_palmoil_aprobi.or_.id_-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s largest palm oil producer Indonesia brought the case to the WTO dispute body in 2019 after the EU decided that palm oil-based diesel would not be considered a biofuel due to its link to deforestation and its use in transport fuel would be phased out between 2023 and 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia argued that the EU is using climate issues as a pretext to implement protectionist trade measures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Indonesian government welcomes the WTO panel decision &#8230; We hope that in the future, other trading partner countries will not implement similar policies that have the potential to hinder the flow of global trade,&#8221; Trade Minister Budi Santoso said in a statement late on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The three-person panel ruled last week that the underlying logic of the EU measures to limit greenhouse gas emissions was legitimate and that the EU had a reasonable basis to designate biodiesel from palm oil as &#8220;high risk&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, the panel found fault in the way the EU had prepared, published and administered its measures, such as by not having a timely review of data to determine high risk and not meeting certain transparency obligations.<\/p>\n<p>The EU was also found giving less favorable treatment to palm oil-based biofuel from Indonesia than accorded to like products of EU origin or imported from third countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian trade ministry said that EU will be compelled to adjust its policy to comply with the ruling, adding that Indonesia will closely monitor EU&#8217;s regulatory changes to meet with the WTO body&#8217;s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>The EU embassy in Jakarta did not immediately response to a request for comments.
