<\/a><\/p>\n\u201cThe LCPKS (liquid waste from palm oil mills) is not a hazardous waste. It has the potential to provide multiple benefits. Many studies have shown that the palm liquid waste has the potential to give environmental, agronomic and economic benefits,\u201d Professor Yanto Santosa of the faculty of forestry at Bogor University of Agriculture (IPB University) said during a public discussion in Jakarta on Monday (10\/02\/2025)<\/p>\n
He said that there is a need for a paradigm change among the industry players to maximize the use of the LCPKS into multiple benefits.<\/p>\n
“To avoid the perception that the palm liquid waste is hazardous, even though it does not contain odorous, hazardous, and poisonous substances, it is necessary to change the term LCPKS from liquid waste to waste water,” said Yanto.<\/p>\n
He further explained that the benefits of liquid palm oil waste are enormous for the economy and environment. If it is managed professionally, it can be used to help generate the economic growth of 8% as planned by President Prabowo Subianto.<\/p>\n
According to him, the processed liquid waste has a variety of nutrient contents that can be used as organic nutrition for oil palm plants through land application (LA). The Land application is a technique in managing liquid waste from palm oil mills by channeling liquid waste through a trench system to the plantations.<\/p>\n
“Its agronomic benefit, based on reviewing data from 15 PKS (palm oil mills), was seen through the fact that around 80 percent of plantations subjected to the land application saw a production increase in fresh fruit bunches (FFB), as compared to those not subjected to such application. Meanwhile, 20 percent did not show a significant increase,” said Yanto, who is also the chairman of the Pusaka Kalam\u2019s Expert Council.<\/p>\n
He said that the palm liquid waste is formed from carbon compounds which can potentially be used as a renewable fuel source for vehicles and power plants. Apart from that, the use of palm liquid waste through a methane capture or biodigester system can reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions.<\/p>\n
“Although requiring big amount of upfront investment in methane capture and biodigester technology, the profits obtained from replacing fuel for boilers and selling palm kernel shells provide significant economic value,” he said.<\/p>\n
Methane capture (MC) is a technology used to capture methane gas resulting from burning palm oil waste. The biodigester is a tool used to convert organic waste into biogas.<\/p>\n
Therefore, with land application, it can be economically profitable in terms of fertilizer savings at around Rp57 billion per year per palm oil mill. This value shows great potential for efficient production costs through sustainable liquid waste management.<\/p>\n
Other than LA and MC, there are several alternatives to using the liquid waste, such as nature-based processing with a combination of liquid waste and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) which in the long term can produce bioplastic products. Apart from that, further study is needed regarding the Palm Acid Oil (PAO), one of the LCPKS derivative products which has various benefits.<\/p>\n
However, currently there are various weaknesses in handling the liquid waste from technical aspect. The weaknesses include a lack of understanding about the multi-benefits of LCPKS although it has the potential for huge agronomic, economic and environmental benefits.
