<\/a><\/p>\nMore than 75% of the total production of palm oil is used for food products, especially cooking oil. The rest is used as raw material to produce various products of cosmetics, personal care, soap, detergent, pharmacy, and bioenergy, which are more ecofriendly.<\/p>\n
Based on the report of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) entitled Palm Oil and Biodiversity which was published in 2018, during the period from 1980 to 2014, global palm oil production increased 15 times, from 4.5 million tons to 70 million tons. In 2024, the global production of palm oil reached around 80 million tons.<\/p>\n
As the global population grows, the role of palm oil in meeting global food demand also increases. Global palm oil demand is estimated to grow by 1.7% per year until 2050.<\/p>\n
Around 85% of the global supply of palm oil comes from Indonesia as the world\u2019s largest producer and exporter of palm oil and Malaysia as the world\u2019s second largest producer and exporter, folllowed by Thailand, Colombia, and Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The palm oil commodity plays a very important role in the national economy of both Indonesia and Malaysia. Employing millions of workers, creating new growth centers in remote areas, developing infrastructure (roads, hospitals and schools), and contributing to national and local economies, the palm oil industry has created a very big multiplier effect to the producing countries.<\/p>\n
The oil palm trees (elaeis guineensis jacq.), are not native to Indonesia, but comes from West Africa and grows best in tropical climates with abundant water, especially in Indonesia. The palm trees produce two types of vegetable oil, namely crude palm oil (CPO) and crude palm kernel oil (PKO).<\/p>\n
Considering the negative campaigns launched by certain groups to block the palm oil at the global market of vegetable oils, what actually will happen if it is replaced with other vegetable oils to meet the rising need of global population for vegetable oils?<\/p>\n
According to the IUCN, a simple switch from oil palm to other oil-producing crops is not a solution as it could lead to further loss of biodiversity and much worse deforestation. Having much higher productivity and efficiency (especially in land and water use), the oil palm produces up to nine times more oil per hectare per year if compared to other vegetable oil crops. As a result, based on environmental consideration, the palm oil can help meet global demand for vegetable oils which is expected to grow from the current 165 million tons per year to 310 million tons by 2050 with the least impacts to environment.<\/p>\n
Banning palm oil could result in reduced efforts to produce palm oil sustainably. Meanwhile, the expansion of land used to produce other vegetable oils such as soybeans, sunflowers and rapeseed will actually cause higher deforestation and negative impact to biodiversity in the vegetable oil production areas.
