BALI \u2013 The Indonesian palm oil industries have a huge potential to help realize the country\u2019s target of reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at 31.89% in 2030. The palm oil industries contribute emissions at around 143 million tons of CO\u00b2 equivalent per year, accounting for almost 18% of the total national emissions. <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Chairman of International Research Institute for Environment and Climate Change from Bogor University of Agriculture (IPB), Rizaldi Boer underlined the importance of wastes treatment and management in the palm oil industries to support the national endeavour of reducing the emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cPalm oil industries play a crucial role in cutting the emissions. Through better management of wastes, energy efficiency, forest protection, and peatland restoration, the palm oil industries can significantly reduce the emissions,\u201d Rizaldi told the participants of the International Conference on Oil Palm and Environment (ICOPE) Series 2025 during a session of the conference\u2019s third day in Bali Beach Convention, Bali, on Friday (14\/02\/2025).<\/p>\n

He said that one of the major sources of emissions in the palm oil industries is the liquid waste called palm oil mill effluent (POME) from the palm oil mills. \u201cModern technology has enabled us to tackle the problem of POME. With the technology of evaporation, the emissions from POME can be reduced up to 90-95%,\u201d said Rizaldi.<\/p>\n

But he said that it should not be only limited on reduction of emissions. \u201cThe wastes can be processed to produce products with economic value. Solid wastes can be processed into biochar, which is potential to reduce CO\u00b2 emissions. The industries have the potential to produce biochar up to 583 thousand tons, which can be used to fertilize soils,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Sime Darby Guthrie Vice President Shahrakbah Yacob highlighted other benefits of palm oil wastes. “The wastes are potential to be used as supplement and fertilizer, increasing organic carbon levels in the soil and helping to maintain moisture,” he said.<\/p>\n

The biochar is produced through the pyrolysis of palm biomass wastes, such as empty fruit bunches, shells and fibers, under low-oxygen conditions. The pyrolysis process optimizes the nutrient content of biochar, concentrating essential elements such as potassium, phosphorus, and carbon, which are essential for plant growth.<\/p>\n

When applied into soil, the porous nature of biochar helps retain water and nutrients, improving soil structure and its nutrient retention, encouraging microbial activity, and creating an optimal environment for plants to grow well.<\/p>\n

The biochar from palm biomass wastes can be an innovative solution to reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. It offers a multifaceted approach to supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing environmental impacts. When applied in combination with chemical fertilizers, biochar significantly improves the nutrient profile of the soil and reduces nutrient loss.
