JAKARTA \u2013 Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said the government will soon inaugurate the trading of carbon from forestry sector in Indonesia. The \u00a0potential carbon dioxide (CO2) to be traded from the forestry sector is projected to reach around 26.5 million tons with a total transaction value estimated at between Rp1.6 trillion and Rp3.2 trillion.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

According to Minister Raja Juli, the inauguration of the carbon trading from forestry is part of Indonesian strategy to mitigate the impacts of global climate change and accelerate implementation of green economy.<\/p>\n

He said that the step will open a big opportunity for Indonesia to sustainably manage its natural resources and provide economic benefits to the public and business players.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re optimistic that carbon trading from forestry sector will become main driver of green economy, food and energy resilience, and realize Indonesia\u2019s commitment in dealing with the global climate change. It is also in line with the vision of President Prabowo Subianto to balance economic growth with sustainability,” the forestry minister said in a press statement on Thursday (13\/3\/2025).<\/p>\n

Initially, the carbon trading will consist of two main schemes, namely forest management by private sector based on forest utilization concessions (PBPH) and social forestry.<\/p>\n

The potential carbon absorption from the PBPH is estimated to reach 20-58 tons of CO2 per hectare with a price of US$$5 – 10 per ton of CO2. Meanwhile, the social forestry is potential to absorb up to 100 tons of CO2 per hectare with a price of 30 Euro per ton of CO2.<\/p>\n

The government has projected that the transaction value of carbon trading from forestry sector in 2025 can reach between Rp1.6 trillion and Rp3.2 trillion per year with potential volume of carbon trading at 26.5 million tons of CO2.<\/p>\n

If optimized until 2034, the potential carbon trading from forestry sector is estimated to reach between Rp97.9 trillion and Rp258.7 trillion per year.\u00a0It will consist of contribution from tax at between Rp23 trillion and Rp60 trillion, while non-tax state income (PNBP) is projected to reach between Rp9.7 trillion and Rp25.8 trillion per year.<\/p>\n

Besides the economic benefit, the carbon trading is also projected to create 170,000 new job opportunities in many locations of the carbon projects across the country.<\/p>\n

The forestry minister said that the carbon trading will not only focus on reduction of emissions, but also on supporting ecological restoration through programs of conservation, afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR).
